1989/2009: Achievements and Challenges for Civil Society in Central and Eastern Europe

On October 7, the Austrian Cultural Forum in NYC will host under this title a panel with Martin Palous, Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic to the UN, Emil Brix, Head of the Cultural Policy Section of the Austrian Foreign Ministry, and Saviana Stanescu, Romanian-American playwright. The guests will be in conversation with Corina Suteu, RCINY Director. Welcome and introduction: Andreas Stadler, ACFNY Director.
This panel will evolve around issues related to the complex issue of civil society in post communist Europe, differences between countries and also common challenges related to the democratization of public space.

Triggering a heavy responsibility toward the rebuilding of social capital in Central and Eastern Europe, the actors of civil society were strongly related both to the political arena and to the artistic and cultural field. How do the 'democratic' societies in that region look today, after 20 years of strong civil society development and how stabilized are the instruments of democratic negotiation? The answer to this question will give the panel a brisk start.
