The Romanian Cultural Institute in Beijing invites you to the opening of the exhibition, "Peace through Art: The Dadaist Manifesto of Tristan Tzara", on March 20, at 11:00 AM, at Galaxy SOHO. This exhibition offers a retrospective of the most significant creations and publications of Tristan Tzara and other universally renowned avant-garde artists (Francis Picabia, Marcel Duchamp, André Breton, René Magritte, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, Sonia Delaunay, Max Ernst, Alberto Giacometti, Yves Tanguy, Jean Arp, Marcel Iancu, etc.), presenting over 100 exhibits, meticulously reproduced posters, drawings, graphic works, and vintage photographs, along with avant-garde creations and publications on the theme of peace.
The DADA movement emerged in 1916 as a reaction against the First World War and the nationalism that defined the era. The unstable context of the time led a large number of artists, writers, and intellectuals – especially of Romanian, French, and German nationality – to seek refuge in Switzerland, a country that maintained its neutrality. The contribution of Tristan Tzara, as well as other Romanian artists, was crucial in defining the Dada movement as a creative and contestatory response to the absurdities of war and contemporary society. Through their linguistic and visual experiments, they destabilized artistic norms and raised questions about the role of art and the artist in society, an approach that remains profoundly relevant in confronting the dilemmas of the modern world. Thus, Dadaism, enriched by Romanian innovations, offers a framework through which art can continue to challenge and critically reflect on the crises of current society, highlighting the power of art to provoke critical thinking and change.
Organized in collaboration with the International Dada Archives at the University of Iowa Library, USA, and with the support of the French Institute, the exhibition is part of the "La Mois de la Francofonie" event series in China. The exhibition will last a month, from March 20 to April 20, inviting all art lovers to learn more about the role of Romanian artists in the European avant-garde movement.
