Title
: PUBLIC SPACES – EU and China sharing perspectives - an exploration on the value of well designed public spaces and the role of artists in making a good public space in Europe and China and how they can contribute to well-being in the cities
Introduction Urbanization is the defining trend of the 21st century. In 1950, one-third of the world’s population lived in cities. By 2030, it is predicted that 75 percent of the world’s population will be living in cities.
It is widely recognized that there are four pillars of sustainability (economic, social, environmental and cultural) and that the creation of high-quality public spaces can have a meaningful impact and play a major role in vitality and well-being of urban centers (be they large or small).

Overall objectives of 6D
The general aim of the EU-Chinese Cultural Dialogues is to extend the existing cultural relations and the bilateral exchange activities into a long-term cultural dialogue on important topics of cultural cooperation between Europe and China.

6D Specific objectivesShifting from sharing information between two representative institutions (CNAA and EUNIC) and following the wider opening to more partners, bringing new formats and enabling artistic exchanges and best practices sharing, the 6D specific topic of Public spaces was identified. The 6D aims also to contextualize with ‘EU-China Partnership on Sustainable Urbanisation’ – the initiative launched by European Commission in 2012.

The EUNIC 6D event proposes an opportunity to get an overview on the importance of Public Space from a European and Chinese perspective, examining trends, outlining potential challenges and opportunities in the design, management and the use of public space.
