The Romanian Cultural Institute in Tel Aviv, in partnership with the Tel Aviv University, Department of Theatre Arts, organize in the beginning of April a joint event celebrating and promoting Romanian contemporary theatre and aiming to create new professional contacts and partnerships in the theatric field, between Romania and Israel.
The project is constructed on three kinds of cultural events: a 6-day masterclass (by Alexander Hausvater), conferences on Romanian drama and theatre (by Cristina Modreanu) and staged readings from contemporary Romanian plays in Hebrew translation (Gianina Cărbunariu - Stop the Tempo!, Vera Ion - Vitamins, Maria Manolescu - Love Thyself). Saviana Stănescu's play Aliens with Extraordinary Skills will also be distributed to the students and other theatre and academic professionals.

Alexander Hausvater is a director born in Bucharest, Romania in 1949. He immigrated with his mother to Israel, where he was a theatre student at the Tel Aviv University and then moved to Ireland where he studied, joining the Abbey Theatre, and became director of the company's experimental wing. After another stint in Israel presenting political theatre, he came to Montreal in 1971 where he established the Montreal Theatre Lab. Soon, however, he was freelancing in both French and English. Hausvater's work is usually controversial as he experiments with image as well as text. For him, a script is merely a guideline and this applies as much to his approach to the classics (Trojan Women, King Lear, Hamlet, As You Like It) as to the modern (The Seagull, M. Butterfly, A Clockwork Orange). His vision often includes violent pictures, nudity, and direct provocation of the audience.
Alexandre Hausvater has directed over 200 productions all over the world, bringing his skills to the ex-Communist countries, back to Israel and the United States. He has worked at the Théâtre de Quat'Sous, Saidye Bronfman Centre, Théâtre d'Aujourd'hui and Théâtre de La Licorne among others here. He has also taught, including at the Université de Québec à Montréal and the National Theatre School of Canada. He has since returned to Europe and also directs plays in Romania.
Cristina Modreanu (born September 1974) is a theater critic and journalist. In 1997 she received a university degree in journalism from the Journalism and Communication Sciences Faculty of the University of Bucharest; her graduation thesis was entitled Tendencies in Romanian Theatrical Journalism between 1990-1996. Cristina Modreanu is currently preparing her thesis Reinventing the Acting Space in Romanian Theater after 1990 as a doctoral candidate at the University of Theatrical and Cinematographic Art in Bucharest. During 2008-2010 she was the artistic director and sole selector of the National Theatre Festival in Bucharest.
