The Center for the Study of Post-Communist Societies (under the directorship of Professor Vladimir Tismăneanu) at the University of Maryland (College Park) and the Romanian Cultural Institute in collaboration with the Cold War International History Project (Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars), Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service (Georgetown University), Comparative Politics and Political Theory Fields (Department of Government and Politics U-MD) and the Embassy of Romanian in the US organize the conference "Remembrance, History, and Justice: Coming to Terms with Traumatic Pasts in Democratic Societies" (Washington D.C., November 11-12, 2010).
This is the fourth such event in a series that began in 2007 focused on providing, by means of reflection on watershed moments of post-1945 history, an overview of the global dynamics characteristic for the 20th century and its lessons for and impact upon the 21st.
The previous conferences were: "Stalinism Revisited: The Establishment of Communist Regimes in East-Central Europe and the Dynamics of the Soviet Bloc" (Washington D.C., November, 29-30, 2007), which came out as a book from CEU Press in 2009; "Promises of 1968: Crisis, Illusions and Utopia" (Washington D.C.. November 6-7, 2008), forthcoming, CEU Press, 2010; "The End and the Beginning: The Revolutions of 1989 and the Resurgence of History" (Washington D.C., November, 9-10, 2009).
