In Memoriam Mihnea Constantinescu

The Embassy of Romania in the United Kingdom and the Romanian Cultural Institute in London invite you to discover one of the most important personalities of post-communist Romania, the diplomat Mihnea Constantinescu. Mihnea Constantinescu (1961-2018) was the senior civil servant whose legacy includes the consolidation of the strategic partnership with the United States of America, one of the most important directions of Romania’s foreign policy.

The event is occasioned by the recent publication in Romanian of “Mihnea Constantinescu – Omul care a schimbat România fără ca noi să ştim / Mihnea Constantinescu – The man who changed Romania unbeknownst to us” (Curtea Veche, 2019), the biography which traces in detail the professional rise of this much-admired mandarin of the Romanian state. Journalist Iulian Comanescu, the author of the biography, will be joined by an impressive line-up of public figures who worked with or closely knew Mihnea Constantinescu for a discussion which will give a deep understanding of Romania’s corridors of powers: HE Dan Mihalache, Andrew Popper, Alexandra Gatej and Dragos Bucurenci.

The evening will conclude with a recital by pianist Mădălina Rusu, who will be playing Handel’s Sarabande,Moments musicaux Op.16by Rachmaninov and Libertango by Piazolla, pieces and composers having been among Mihnea Constantinescu’s favourites.
