Aferim! – one of the biggest Romanian cinematographic projects of the recent years is a historical film. The plot takes place in Ţara Românească of the year 1835. Captain Costandin together with his son are looking for a fugitive slave. Thus, Aferim! dramatizes a former taboo subject, the Roma slavery in Romania that was abolished in 1856. With this film, which speaks „about prejudice, but also about the limits of the representation of the historical reality in film, the beauty of the Romanian language as well as about the links between the past and the present“, Radu Jude won the “Silver Bear” for the Best Director in Berlinale.

One floor below (Un etaj mai jos) – is an oblique drama that tells the story of Pătraşcu, an apparently ordinary character who has the misfortune to be the sole witness of a domestic violence scene that ends with a murder. The rest of the story is about his inner battle. The film has been selected for the “Un Certain Regard” section of the Cannes Film Festival.
